TOP SHOTTAS (JA) <Shottas
is a hardcore ghetto drama that depicts the lives of two life-long friends, Wayne (Spragga
Benz) and Biggs (Ky-mani Marley) - focusing on their rise from childhood thugs to their
climax as heartless gangsters in the streets of Jamaica and Miami, and ultimately their
downfall at the hands of the choices they made in life. The movie explores the universal
themes of friendship, loyalty, greed, and the role of violence and drugs in modern day
urban society. This movie is unapologetic in its depiction of ghetto life and the
violence that is so much a part of that equation today. The emotions are realistic,
the images are graphic, and the message is shockingly clear: if you live by the gun, you
die by the gun. That's not to say that the movie doesn't have some soft spots, as it
does offer some moments of comic relief (but we won't spoil it by telling you everything
here)...
This film grabs your attention on so many levels, but perhaps
one of the most riveting features about the film is the "authencity" of it's
dialogue. The use of "up to date" patois and urban slang in this movie is
beyond impressive to say the least. The actors actually sound like Jamaicans, and
not "people trying to sound like Jamaicans". They don't give you watered
down dialect for the sake of you understanding what they are staying. Instead they
talk just the way they would sound in real life, you know, the patios you hear in the
streets and in the dancehall music. Such phrases as "... dem dawg ya affi
eat" (meaning these guys gotta get their money) and "... we ave di city
lock" (meaning we control this city) are common place in the movie, to the extent
that subtitles are included for those not too hip on the lingua. This loyalty to the
true speech of the streets of course means the movie hits you with that "in your
face" reality that leaves you glued to your seat from start to finish.
In addition to Spragga Benz and Ky-mani Marley, the movie also
features the talents of Hip Hop/R&B superstar Wyclef Jean (also executive producer of
the film), Paul Campbell (of Dancehall Queen fame), and Louie Rankin (who stole the show
in Belly and almost does the same here). The film also features tons of cameos (many
from the dancehall world) to the point where it becomes a task just trying to see how many
stars you can name. This film marks the directorial debut of Jamaican filmmaker Cess
Silvera, and if this film is a true example of what he is capable of, then we hope to hear
a lot more from him. Review written by Prince TuFFiE> 2001
THIRD WORLD COP (JA) <From
the production team that brought you 1997's breakout hit, Dancehall Queen, comes Third
World Cop, Jamaica's highest grossing film of all time. Set in the exotic and gritty
streets of modern day Kingston, Third World Cop tells the story of two friends whose lives have taken them in very different directions. Capone (Paul Campbell), a
star crime fighter, is transferred back to his former hometown where he meets up with an
old friend, Ratty (Mark Danvers), who operates as the right-hand of the notorious local
don, Wonie (Carl Bradshaw, star of Smile Orange who also appeared in The Harder They
Come). Capone is alarmed that the friend he considered a brother, is now the lead man in a
violent gunrunning scheme. Torn between their loyalty to each other and their present
lives, each tries to convince the other to join his ranks.
Caught in their struggle is Rita (Audrey Reid), Capone's
childhood sweetheart who, against huge odds, has built an honest life in the community.
Powerless to intercede, she watches her friends clash over their conflicting ideals.
Unable and unwilling to compromise or change their directions, Capone and Ratty's battle
unfolds in this compelling drama.
With an exclusive opening in early October '99 in Jamaica, over
100,000 people flocked to see Third World Cop bringing the box office take of over to
$500,000 US ($21 million Jamaican). Third World Cop's opening weekend broke all box-office
records on the island and during its remarkably strong four-month run, more than 10% of
the adult population in Jamaica saw the film. Filmed in Jamaica - 1999 (Available on DVD & VHS Video)
KLASH (JA) <Hard-edged,
erotic, and as full of suspenseful intrigue as the best film noir, KLA$H tells the story
of a world-weary photographer who falls into the clutches of a beautiful dancehall girl
and a world of crime, deceit, and murder. Stoney (Giancarlo Esposito - "Homicide",
"Do The Right Thing") comes to Jamaica to photograph the Klash,
an electrifying battle of the world's best reggae and dancehall bands. His ex-lover
Blossom (Jasmine Guy - "A Different World") is a sexy star of the
dancehalls and the mistress of gang kingpin Mr. Lee (Lucien Chen). Every criminal in
Kingston has their eye on the box office receipts from the Klash, including Mr. Lee, whose
own thugs plans to doublecross him and steal the money from under his nose.
Meanwhile Stoney and Blossom's old chemistry ignites, and Stoney finds himself entrenched
in Blossom's plan to steal the cash for herself and escape Kingston forever. There
is never honor among thieves, and the stakes become increasingly high as the police, led
by Lieutenant Loveless (Cedella Marley), quickly close in.
KLA$H captures the non-stop action and suspense of a thriller
and combines that with the pumping hardcore culture of Jamaica's dancehall music to
produce a film that many believe is one of the best theatrical works filmed in Jamaica.
The film is ingeniously punctuated with live performances by Shabba Ranks, Bounty
Killer, Capleton, Ninja Man, Papa San, Mad Cobra, Lady Patra, Snow, and Prince Midas.
The film also features the music of Bob Marley, Beenie Man, Shaggy, Steel Pulse,
Born Jamericans, and Chaka Demus & Pliers!!> Filmed in Jamaica (Available on DVD & VHS Video)
DANCEHALL QUEEN (JA) <The
greatest theatrical work to come out of Jamaica for the past decade. The
heroine (Audrey Reid)is a hard working hustler barely getting by when some bad circumstances befalls her. Trying to keep her daughters safe
from a "touchy feely" Uncle while dodging a local bad man, she finally dreams up
a scheme to escape the ghetto life by secretly entering a dance contest to challenge the
local dancehall queen! However, when it is revealed that she is just a street
hustler going up against the glamorous queen from the other side of the tracks, she must
win over their support to prevail! Amidst all this she must also dodge the threatening
antics of an area badman (Paul Campbell), who will stop at nothing to seduce
her.
This movie chronicles a Cinderella story with a ghetto twist.
With a believable story-line, a pumping sound track, scores of guest appearances by reggae
artists (including Beenie Man , Mr. Vegas & Sean Paul, and Anthony B), and nuff raw
footage of what Reggae Dancehall in Jamaica is really like, this movie is bound to make
its mark in dancehall history! I realize nuff of you are unable to get the movie in
your area so why not special order it through us!!> Filmed in Jamaica - 1996 (Available on DVD &
VHS Video)
COUNTRY MAN (JA) <A
tale about politics, money, deception, obeah, and the powers of nature! When Bobby and Beau crash their borrowed airplane in a Jamaican swamp, they are
recused by Countryman, a simple fisherman with mystical powers, who protects them from the
power-hungry Colonel Sinclair. Countryman is no ordinary man; he is a man of the sea, a
man of knowledge, in effortless harmony with everything that lives and breathes around
him. And when violence peaks and Countryman finds his friends under attack, he
enlists the powers that be to defend them from his foes!!
Just as enchanting as the film itself is the intoxicating
rhythms of the lush reggae soundtrack that compliments the background, featuring the Late
Great Bob Marley (to which the film owes it's inspiration and is dedicated to), Toots and
the Maytals, Steel Pulse, Dennis brown, Lee Perry, Wally Badarou, Rico, Aswad, Fabulous
Five, Jah Lion, Human Cargo, and Rebop Kwaku Baah.> Filmed in Jamaica - Mid 1980s (Available on DVD & VHS Video)
BONGO MAN (JA) <"Bongo
Man" is an inspiring musical experience told through reggae in Jamaica in 1980 - the
island seething with turmoil and ripe for civil war. Exploding onto this
already inflammatory scene is Jimmy Cliff. He is a Bongo Man, performing his songs
as a musical answer to the political unrest and tension. A vast audience of 2,000
excited people respond to his unique rendition of "Togetherness" and
"Oneness", full of meaning and new hope for them. Jimmy's philosophy is
that politics divides and music unites. In style he combines both Rastafari and the
original Jamaican Maroons. The Bongo Man proves through his songs and dynamic
personality that music can overcome fear and tragedy.
When Ivan, a young black from the slums, dies in a hail of
bullets, Jimmy is there to sing his epitaph. He proves it's a hard road to travel,
but urges all to stand up and fight back for what is right. "Bongo Man"
tugs on the heartstrings and emotions - more than any other film you've ever seen!> - 1980 (Available on DVD & VHS Video)
ROCKERS (JA) <Described
as a "...trenchtown variant on Robin Hood...," Rockers
is a "... funny, complex picture of life among poor Jamaican Rastafarians - with
cogent commentary about the [reggae] music business..." The movie stars Leroy
'Horsemouth' Wallace and Richard 'Dirty Harry' Hall.
A young man makes a living as a drummer while he uses a
newly-purchased motorbike to sell records to shops around Kingston. Then his bike is
stolen. And he steals it back. When the mafia types catch up to him and beat
him up he swears to get justice. And, with a little help from his friends, he does.
Amidst all this he manages to stage an uprising for the benefit of his
community.
Perhaps even more riveting than the plot itself is the plethora of reggae music artists
who perform both major roles and guest appearances in the movie. Appearing in the
movie are Jacob Miller ("Tenement Yard"), Gregory Isaacs (who plays Jah Tooth, a
hardcore motor-bike salesman and ace locksmith), Leroy Smart, Burning Spear (performing an
acapella version of "Jah No Dead"), Kiddus I (performing "Graduation In
Zion"), Robbie Shakespeare, Big Youth, and Dillinger.
In addition to music from many of the artists aforementioned,
the movie's soundtrack also features music by Peter Tosh ("Stepping Razor"),
Bunny Wailer, Third World, The Heptones ("Book of Rules"), The Maytones
("Money Worries"), Junior Byles ("Police & Thieves"), The
Abbyssinians, and more. Even famous Jamaican producers are featured in this film
(namely Joe Gibbs and Jack Ruby). In fact Jack Ruby can be seen producing Kiddus I's
"Graduation In Zion", while in another scene Horsemouth bargains with Joe Gibbs
over records to distribute. Much of the movie's music was recorded in Joe Gibb's
studio.
In many ways this movie was ahead of it's time, and its seamless
collaboration of a universal plot (ghetto life) with foundation roots rock reggae music
makes it a classic which will not be forgotten any time soon. An integral part of
any movie collection, this work simultaneously celebrates pioneering Jamaican movie
production with conscious Rastafarian music.> 1977 (Available on DVD & VHS Video)
SMILE ORANGE (JA)
<This is alight-hearted tale mostly about Ringo (Carl Bradshaw), the slick waiter and super stud at a beach hotel, who made a profitable art of servility.
"A black man who can't play the part will starve to death" Ringo tells a
busboy he is training in the art of picking up single women tourists. Little does he
know that his sly ways would soon back fire and turn the whole hotel into a frenzy.
The film Smile Orange - which pokes fun at the tourist trade in
Jamaica - was the first production of the Jamaican company, Knuts Productions
Limited, and was adapted from the play of the same name which was written by Trevor Rhone,
who also directed the film version. The play opened at Kingston's Bam Theatre in
November 1971 for a three week run, but instead ran for three years to audiences in
Kingston, New York, Connecticut, London, and the Eastern Caribbean. A true Jamaican
classic!> Filmed in Jamaica - Mid 1970s (Available on DVD & VHS Video)
THE HARDER THEY COME (JA) <Far
from the vacationer's world of sand and surf lies the real Jamaica - and it comes alive in this cult favorite
which made Jimmy Cliff a star, and Reggae a music to dance to all over the world.
Cliff is the tragic hero of this saga: a country boy who is ruthlessly pumping sound
track, scores of guest appearances by reggae artists (including Beenie Man , Mr. Vegas
& Sean Paul, and Anthony B), and nuff raw footage of what Reggae Dancehall in Jamaica
is really like, this movie is bound to make its mark in dancehall history! I realize
nuff of you are unable to get the movie in your area so why not special order it through
us!!
There is energy, fury ,and ambitious fantasy in Cliff's
portrayal of millions of young people trying to break out of lives of desperation and
poverty. It is a story with universal impact, yet the Director, Henxzell, keeps it
placed in authenticity the way it might have happened. The background Reggae beat that
narrates the film (most of which is performed by Cliff himself) accentuate the visual
surprises. Immediately ebullient in spirit and disturbing in effect, it is simply a
marvelous motion picture.> Filmed in Jamaica - 1970s (Available
on DVD & VHS Video)
